The federal government, apparently, allows ICE agents to shield their identities and their agency. This enables impersonators to much more easily kidnap people. But we in California might be able to stop this. Here is the contents of a postcard sent to: Senators Padilla and Schiff, Representative Vargas, my state senator and assembly representative, and to all the members of the California Senate Judicial committee.
New law needed to stop anonymous ICE arrests:
ANY person who arrests, detains, or physically prevents another from going about their business, without positively identifying themselves, their agency, AND if not in an obviously dangerous situation, allowing that person to verify their status, shall be guilty of kidnapping and subject to the laws and penalties of kidnapping.
That was sent about two weeks ago. A few days ago I saw Senator Padilla on a talk show, as I recall, and he mentioned proposing a law to stop this at the federal level. Almost certainly a coincidence, but nice to hear.
Please consider sending such a postcard or letter.
